Project communication, beyond everyday work
The factory may already have its own fleet for routine work. Rental is needed when outside workers arrive at the plant and everything happens at once.
When industry rents instead of buying
Many plants already have radios for routine maintenance and security. Two-way radio rental for industry comes in when the need is temporary or far exceeds the existing fleet. The most common cases:
- Maintenance shutdown scheduled, with dozens or hundreds of contractors for a few days or weeks.
- Commissioning and startup of lines, equipment and utilities, with suppliers’ technicians.
- Expansion and construction inside the plant, with installation contractors, scaffolding and lifting operations.
- Annual stocktake, bringing administrative and operational teams together at the same time.
- Production peak or a temporary extra shift.
- Audits, visits and internal events, such as SIPAT and family days, which require team coordination.
In these situations, buying radios to use for a few weeks a year rarely pays off. If you are deciding between renting and buying, the guide buying or renting radios: 6 criteria for deciding helps compare cost, maintenance and flexibility.
How to organize communication during a maintenance shutdown
Maintenance shutdowns are the most demanding case for two-way radios in industry: many people unfamiliar with the plant, short deadlines and elevated risk. One arrangement that works well at most plants:
- Dedicated emergency channel, used only by the emergency response team, control room and shutdown coordination.
- One group per work front: mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, boilermaking, scaffolding, insulation and industrial cleaning.
- Coordination group, where each work-front leader talks with planning and occupational safety.
- Lifting channel, separate, for the signaler, rigger and crane operator.
- Gate and logistics group, for incoming materials, skips and vehicles.
With groups defined in advance, radios arrive programmed and the shutdown starts with organized communication from the first shift. A distribution list by work front, with each radio’s number, simplifies tracking and final returns.
Noise, PPE and accessories
In industrial environments, the accessory determines whether the message gets through. Near compressors, turbines, presses and boilers, a radio without a suitable earpiece simply cannot be heard. The most commonly used accessories for industrial radio rental:
- Noise-isolating earpiece and a talk button, for high-noise areas.
- Lapel microphone with a speaker, for those working with their hands occupied.
- Hard-hat-compatible earpiece, when required by PPE.
- Higher-capacity battery and spares, for 12-hour shifts.
- Multi-unit charger, to organize charging in a secure room.
Each accessory’s compatibility with the radio and PPE is checked in the proposal.
Classified hazardous areas: when an ordinary radio cannot enter
Refineries, petrochemical, chemical, paint and fuel plants, mills and some food plants have classified hazardous areas, where gases, vapors or dust may create an explosive atmosphere. Only radios specifically certified for explosive atmospheres may be used there, and the certification type depends on the area’s classification.
If the shutdown or project includes a classified hazardous area, provide its classification and the number of people working there in your initial request. Feasibility and equipment are assessed before the proposal. Learn more in the guide on intrinsically safe radios and certifications.
Coverage at the plant
Industrial plants combine metal warehouses, extensive outdoor areas, substations, machinery rooms, cable tunnels and administrative buildings. Direct radio-to-radio communication serves much of them, but points such as basements, tank interiors and remote areas may need a repeater.
Band choice also matters: UHF tends to perform better inside buildings and urban areas with obstacles, while VHF generally performs better in open areas (see UHF or VHF: which band to choose). When radio-to-radio communication cannot reach every location, a repeater can extend coverage, and it is possible to plan a rental coverage test before use.
In confined spaces, communication between the worker and attendant is part of the safety procedure. Test communication before entry and keep a channel free for this use.

- InfrastructureA repeater and, if required by the project, body-worn cameras.
Items, quantities and terms apply according to the approved proposal.
How tailored rental works
You do not need to know the radio model to request an industrial two-way radio rental proposal. The starting point is the operation: who needs to talk to whom, where and for how long.
- You describe the situation: approximate number of people, plant operating address (city and site), dates and environment type. Plans, photographs or a short site video help.
- The technical team plans the setup: communication groups, battery life per shift, accessories for the noise level and critical coverage areas.
- The proposal describes everything: radios, accessories, included services, rental period, logistics and terms, negotiable according to the scope.
- Radios programmed by team: agreed groups come preconfigured; if the company has its own radios, we check compatibility.
- Support throughout the contract: support agreed in the proposal and extensions confirmed before the end date if the operation runs longer.
Industrial configuration examples
Group setups used as a starting point when preparing an industrial two-way radio rental proposal:
| Project | Typical communication groups | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance shutdown | Emergency, coordination, work areas, lifting and gatehouse | Many people, contractors and short deadlines |
| Line commissioning | Coordination, automation, electrical, mechanical and production | Machinery under test and variable noise |
| Expansion or internal construction | Engineering, assembly, scaffolding, lifting and occupational safety | Work fronts that change with the schedule |
| Annual stocktake | Coordination, counting by area and recounting | Administrative teams unfamiliar with radios |
| Temporary extra shift | Production, maintenance and internal logistics | Integration with the owned fleet |
The table is a starting point, not a rule: radio quantities, groups and accessories come from the actual scenario.

Commissioning and line startup
During commissioning, communication follows the tests: automation releases equipment, electrical confirms energization, mechanical observes behavior and production validates the result. If everyone uses a mobile phone, notices arrive out of order. With industrial two-way radios, test coordination talks to everyone simultaneously, and each work area knows exactly when to act.
Because supplier technicians often come from other states or countries, first-day operating guidance is important: which group to use, how to call coordination and which channel is for emergencies. Industrial two-way radio rental covers the commissioning period and may be extended if startup is delayed, under the contract terms.
Annual inventory with radios
During inventory, administrative teams who do not normally use radios count materials in stores, yards and production areas. A group per counting area and a coordination group prevent unnecessary recounts: when a discrepancy appears, coordination calls the right team immediately. This short use of two or three days is ideal for industrial two-way radio rental.
Occupational safety during maintenance shutdowns
During maintenance shutdowns, radio is part of several safety procedures: releasing work permits, energy lockout and tagging, confined-space entry, work at height and lifting. For each procedure, define who speaks on which channel and test communication before starting. Every contractor must know the emergency channel from the safety induction, together with the rules for using industrial radios during the maintenance shutdown.
Owned fleet and rented radios together
When the plant already has radios, the most frequent question is whether rented radios will communicate with them. This depends on band (VHF or UHF), operating mode (analog or digital) and programming. Send the fleet’s brand and model: where compatible, rented radios join a common group with the factory team; otherwise, the proposal specifies separate groups with a contact point between teams, normally coordination.
Example: a two-week shutdown with 120 people
During an annual shutdown, a chemical plant receives around 120 people from six contractor companies, in addition to its own team. Coordination defines seven groups (emergency, coordination, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation, boilermaking, scaffolding and gatehouse) and a dedicated lifting channel. Some work areas are hazardous and receive certified radios; the rest use conventional radios.
Work-area leaders receive extra batteries; those near noisy equipment receive noise-isolating headsets. Radios arrive programmed and labeled by work area, and a coordinator controls distribution. At shutdown’s end, everything is returned together. This is the type of project where industrial two-way radio rental offers the best value.
Contractor induction: radio issued with the badge
On large projects, radios should be issued during safety induction, when contractors receive badges, PPE and plant rules. Using this moment to issue a radio programmed for the right work area, explain the emergency channel and record collection avoids first-day chaos when dozens of people arrive simultaneously.
At project end, returns follow the same route in reverse: the radio is returned on departure with the badge. With this control, industrial two-way radio rental ends with quantities checked and no radios forgotten on scaffolding or in machinery rooms.
Rental period
- One-day or weekend projects: daily.
- Setups, inventories and short shutdowns: weekly.
- Regular shifts or seasonal reinforcement: monthly.
- Permanent communication, including with a repeater: long-term.
For industrial two-way radio rental, extensions and quantity adjustments are agreed under the contract. More details on the page for rental.

Frequently asked questions
Do you rent radios for maintenance shutdowns?
Yes. It is one of the most common uses of industrial two-way radio rental. Provide dates, number of people, work areas and whether there is a hazardous area.
How can radio losses be avoided at the end of a shutdown?
Issue radios during safety induction, record who collected each one and have them returned with badges on departure. Radios labeled by work area make the final check easier.
Do I need an Anatel license to use the rented radios?
Not for rental equipment: ABC Mais Telecom already includes the use of Anatel-licensed frequencies. If your company intends to mix in its own radios or install a repeater, mention this in the request and we will confirm the applicable arrangement.
Do you have radios for classified hazardous areas?
Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres require specifically certified radios. State the area’s classification in the request: feasibility and equipment are assessed before the proposal.
Do rented radios communicate with the factory's fleet?
They can communicate if band, operating mode and programming are compatible. Send the brand and model of existing radios for us to check.
How much does industrial radio rental cost?
The price depends on quantity, period, accessories, certified radio or repeater requirements and logistics. Terms are negotiable and described in the proposal.
Can a channel be reserved solely for lifting?
Yes. Programming can reserve a dedicated group for signaller, rigger and operator, separate from other work areas, as agreed with occupational safety.
Do radios arrive programmed and labeled?
Yes. Groups agreed in the proposal (emergency, coordination, work areas, lifting and gatehouse) are already programmed, and radios can be labeled by work area to simplify distribution and return at the end of the maintenance shutdown.
Do you serve industries outside the State of São Paulo?
Our main service area is the State of São Paulo, from headquarters in São Bernardo do Campo. Projects in other regions are assessed individually according to scope and logistics.
What happens if a radio fails during the shutdown?
Rental can include maintenance and replacement of faulty equipment. These terms are described in the proposal, together with the contact for requesting support.
