How much does two-way radio rental cost? What determines the price
Radio rental · pricing and proposals
The cost of renting two-way radios does not come from one standard price list. It is built around five factors: how many radios, for how long, at which site, with which accessories and what support during use. The site matters more than it may seem: floors, basements, rooftops and obstacles determine whether radios communicate directly or need a repeater.

What determines the cost of renting two-way radios
In two-way radio rental, the cost reflects the operation the radios will support. Two quotes for the same number of radios can have very different prices: one includes spare batteries, earpieces, a repeater and replacements during the event; the other includes only the devices.
| Factor | What affects the cost | What to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity | Number of radios and talkgroups | How many people communicate at the same time, not the entire team’s headcount |
| Rental period | Daily, weekly, monthly or long-term | Setup, operation and teardown |
| Site and coverage | Direct radio-to-radio or with a repeater | Floors, basement, outdoor area and the farthest location |
| Accessories | Spare batteries, chargers, earpieces and lapel microphones | Long shifts, loud environments, public-facing work |
| Service | Radio replacement, support and logistics | Delivery and return times, and whether on-site support is available |

Do I need an amateur radio or a professional radio?
For a business operation, the answer is a professional radio. Many people use the Portuguese term “rádio amador” (amateur radio) for a license-free walkie-talkie bought in a shop, operating without a frequency plan. It serves simple, short-distance use in open areas, but the channels are shared and it does not work with a repeater.
Actual amateur radio is something different: a service for personal and technical purposes, without commercial interest, requiring an operator certificate. It is not the route for coordinating a work team.

ABC rentals use professional radios (Motorola Solutions or Hytera), with talkgroups for each team, and use of Anatel-licensed frequencies is already included by ABC. See also the difference between walkie-talkies and professional radios for rental.
Basement, rooftop, repeater and obstacles: why the site changes the proposal
A portable radio transmits at low power, generally 4 to 5 watts. In open areas, that is enough for many operations. Inside buildings, the signal loses strength at each floor slab, concrete wall and metal structure. Underground, concrete and soil block it further.
That is why the project starts with the site. UHF, used in most rentals, penetrates built environments better than VHF. Even so, success depends on the path between the farthest locations: basement to rooftop, gatehouse to the back of the parking lot, or one side of an industrial building to the other.

| Site condition | What happens to the signal | What typically helps |
|---|---|---|
| A building with several floors | Each slab weakens the signal; distant floors stop hearing one another | Test floor by floor; use a repeater if the link cannot be established |
| Basement and parking garage | Concrete and soil block the signal; this is the most critical location | A repeater or antenna positioned to serve the basement |
| Terrace or rooftop | A high, unobstructed point, suitable for signal radiation | A common location for the repeater and antenna |
| Obstacles in the path | Industrial buildings, containers, metal structures and hills create dead zones | A higher antenna or a repeater with a clear path to both sides |
| Endpoints | The farthest location defines the project, not the average | Test those specific locations before use |
Daily, weekly or monthly: what changes
- Daily or weekend: events, trade shows, concerts, races and promotional activities. Talkgroups are planned for setup, the event and teardown.
- Weekly: multi-day trade shows, maintenance shutdowns, stocktaking and temporary operations.
- Monthly or long-term: routine operations in businesses, construction sites, factories and residential complexes, with the fleet sized by department and shift, without tying up capital in a purchase.
If the need is permanent and the fleet is stable, it is also worth comparing a purchase. The buying or renting radios guide explains the criteria.
What may be included in the rental
- Use of Anatel-licensed frequencies, already included by ABC in the rental, according to the contracted project.
- Motorola Solutions and Hytera professional radios, with talkgroups and calling procedures defined for the operation.
- A repeater, when the coverage test indicates it is needed.
- Spare batteries and chargers for long shifts.
- Earpieces and lapel microphones for loud environments and public-facing work.
- Body cameras, for security and access control teams.
- Replacement of a faulty radio during the period, according to the proposal.
How to compare radio rental proposals
- Frequency: is use of a licensed frequency included, or is it the customer’s responsibility?
- Radio type: is it a professional radio or a license-free walkie-talkie?
- Coverage: has anyone assessed the site? Were the basement and farthest location considered? Is a repeater planned?
- Battery: does battery life cover the entire shift? Is there a spare battery?
- Accessories: are earpieces and lapel microphones included or charged separately?
- Service: what happens if a radio fails during use?
- Actual period: are setup, operation, teardown and extensions covered?
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to rent a two-way radio?
It depends on quantity, duration, site, accessories and support during use. The price is set in the proposal, based on the scenario provided, and the quote carries no obligation.
Do I need a repeater?
It depends on the site. In open areas over short distances, radios communicate directly. In buildings with many floors, basements, industrial buildings obstructing the path or very distant locations, a repeater is often needed. A coverage test confirms this before use.
Does the radio work in a basement?
It works when the project accounts for the basement. Concrete and soil block the signal, so a repeater or an antenna positioned to serve the basement is often required. Mention any basement or parking garage in the quote request.
Will a more powerful radio solve a lack of signal?
Only to a limited extent. Doubling power adds little range, and portable radios have power limits. Antenna height and a repeater help more than power.
Is amateur radio suitable for a company?
No. Amateur radio is a service for personal purposes without commercial interest. A license-free walkie-talkie serves only simple uses. Work teams need professional radios with a licensed frequency.
Do I need an Anatel license to rent radios?
When renting from ABC Mais Telecom, use of frequencies licensed with Anatel is already included by ABC, according to the site and contracted project.
What is the minimum rental period?
Daily, weekend, weekly, monthly and long-term rentals are available. Each contract’s period is defined in the proposal.
Does ABC serve individual consumers?
No. Rentals are for businesses, production companies, event organizers and residential complexes.
