Technical guide for the Hytera RD986S repeater

Identity and capacity of the RD986S

The RD986S belongs to the RD98XS family and is identified by that name on the official Hytera Brazil page. The data sheet publishes a capacity of 1,024 channels, 100% duty cycle, and 13.6 V DC power supply with a tolerance of plus or minus 15%. These data belong to the RD986S and should not be mixed with the 64 channels published for the RD986/RD98X family.

Channel capacity is a configuration limit, not an indication that all positions are in use. A project needs to organize channels, groups, signaling, and permissions according to the existing network. The final programming must be documented and preserved for maintenance.

Six frequency band alternatives

The documentation presents six options: VHF1 from 136 to 174 MHz, VHF3 from 210 to 270 MHz, UHF3 from 350 to 400 MHz, UHF1 from 400 to 470 MHz, UHF2 from 450 to 520 MHz, and UHF5 from 806 to 941 MHz. Each range represents a variant. A single RD986S does not cover all these bands.

In the VHF1, VHF3, UHF1, UHF2, and UHF3 versions, the published continuous power ranges from 5 to 50 W. The UHF5 must be treated by sub-band: transmission from 851 to 870 MHz operates from 5 to 35 W; transmission from 935 to 941 MHz operates from 5 to 30 W. Summarizing the entire UHF5 as 5 to 30 W would erase a difference expressed in the official table.

100% duty cycle and thermal design

The 100% duty cycle is a specification of the RD986S, but it does not authorize installation without calculation. Power, ventilation, ambient temperature, antenna, cable losses, and site conditions influence the design. Continuous operation requires proper mounting, stable power supply, and verification of the RF path.

The published operating temperature ranges from minus 30 to plus 60 degrees Celsius. For storage, the reference ranges from minus 40 to plus 85 degrees Celsius. These limits do not replace the analysis of the rack, ventilation, power system, and environmental protection.

IP network, roaming, and RDAC

Hytera declares IP interconnection of repeaters, including between different frequencies, with support for voice, data, and automatic roaming within the documented architecture. The RD986S is not a PoC terminal. The IP link integrates repeaters into a DMR network and depends on coherent addressing, connectivity, latency, and configuration.

The RDAC feature allows remote control and diagnostics via IP and local access via USB. In maintenance, this capability can support reading alarms and monitoring the equipment. It does not replace measurements of power supply, transmission, reception, antenna, and connectivity.

Analog and digital transition

The official page informs interconnection between analog and digital operation and automatic channel switching. This feature helps plan gradual migration, provided that channels, groups, signaling, and terminals are addressed in the project. The RD986S does not automatically turn any analog radio into a participant in a DMR network.

Dual-slot audio output makes both voice slots available through the rear accessory pins. Use of this interface must follow the published pinout and architecture. XPT, encryption, IP54, Anatel number, integrated power supply and battery backup are not confirmed in the specific references used for this selection.

Interface and physical characteristics

The RD986S data sheet publishes a 50.8 mm diagonal LCD, corresponding to the 2 inches published by the manufacturer, resolution of 220 by 176, 262 thousand colors, and four lines. The nominal local audio is 0.5 W. Dimensions are 483 by 88 by 366 mm and mass is 8.5 kg. These measurements must be included in the rack design, ventilation, cable routing, and maintenance access.

The screen and front controls help with local verification, but technical acceptance must go beyond the interface. Power supply, RF variant, programmed power, transmission, reception, audio, IP connectivity, temperature, and a copy of the final configuration must be checked.

Information needed before quoting

To select an RD986S, provide the desired band, power, locations to be served, antenna type, cable path, power supply, IP connectivity, number of channels, and network topology. The distance between points, terrain, and structures must be measured. The page does not offer a coverage promise.

Power supply, duplexer, cables, connectors, antenna and protection depend on the variant and project. Components are selected by exact reference and compatibility with the repeater variant.

Support to size the solution

Before quoting, inform desired band, power, locations, power supply, antenna, IP connectivity and DMR architecture. These data define the correct RD986S variant.

Connectivity scenario

IP interconnection links repeaters within the documented architecture. It does not turn the RD986S into a PoC terminal and depends on network design.

Groups and operation

The configuration must separate channels, groups, roaming and interconnection according to the license and DMR network architecture.
